April 24, 2008: Save A Park Day

NC Gov. Mike Easley (left) with NC Rep. Walter Dalton (right) at Chimney Rock to officially celebrate the state's acquisition of the park.

TheGreenerHome.com's Earth Day Countdown designates April 24, 2008, as "Save A Park Day." A tip of the hat to all those who do what they can to preserve urban and rural green spaces. Could anyone imagine NYC without Central Park, Washington, DC, without The Mall, or America without Yellowstone? Nor could the folks of Western North Carolina imagine the Blue Ridge Mountains without their beloved Chimney Rock Park. Many thanks to all who spoke up and worked to save it from being sold to private developers; they'll go down in history as environmental heroes. May their success serve as a reminder that improved air quality of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park remains a high priority. May it provide renewed hope for those fighting Asheville developers and politicians intent on building Parkside, a proposed high-rise condo to be situated inside Pack Square Park, the heart of Downtown Asheville. TheGreenerHome.com's Earth Day Countdown designates April 27, 2008, as "No Food For Fuel Day."
